You are God's Masterpiece
God, why did you make me this way?
Evan Siggson

WCCS Spiritual Emphasis Week, March 9, 2009

Evan Siggson, High School Pastor at Knott Avenue Christian Church in Anaheim — and a WCCS Graduate — kicked off this year’s Spiritual Emphasis Week by reminding our students that “You are God’s Masterpiece.”

Using self-deprecating humor, he encouraged them to reflect on the words of Isaiah 45:9-10 (NLT):

“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator.
Does a clay pot argue with its maker?
Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying,
      ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’
   Does the pot exclaim,
      ‘How clumsy can you be?’
How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father,
      ‘Why was I born?’
or if it said to its mother,
‘Why did you make me this way?’”

Each one of us tends to ask God, ‘Why did you make me this way?’  But God wants us to remember that each one of us is a masterpiece . . . an original piece of art!

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
For we are God’s masterpiece.
He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

He closed by directing them to the story of Jesus multiplying the loaves and fishes (Mark 8:1-8) as a reminder that, if we place our unique gifts into the hands of the Master, great things can happen.
