Mrs. Phillips - Jr. High Social Studies
Welcome to Junior High History
7th Grade - World History
There are 5 units covering history from Creation through the present time. We read all material aloud in class so that the students may learn the proper pronunciation of the people and places as well as have the integration of geography with the large class maps. As we read through the chapters, the students are responsible for doing the section quizzes which are graded together for one score. The Chapter Reviews are done when we finish the chapter and often include one or two questions from Developing History Skills, Thinking Critically and/or Living in God's World.
All tests are geography based as it is difficult to understand history without knowing where countries are, what countries geographical features (mountains, rivers, etc.) and their location in the world. Ususally, extra credit is built into each test. Additionally extra credit can be earned by watching the nations evening news on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox and recording the broadcasters name and listing each news story.
All projects are done in class or in the computer lab.
8th Grade - American History
Students compile, organize and complete an Historic Study notebook. In the computer lab, they print over 300 picture requirements to go in the notebook.
Covering Jamestown 1607 to the present, it is an in depth study of our nation. I've told them many times they know more when they graduate from the eighth grade than I did when I graduated from college and I have a teaching concentration in Social Studies!
Everything is done together in class. The only homework is to study for tests. |
